The last time that we saw River Song on Doctor Who, it seemed as though she was making her final appearance. However, with the show's "timey wimey" nature, no one's ever really gone forever ... and such is the case with Ms. Song—a character whom I loved, got annoyed with, then loved again—according to the BBC*:
It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.I am all for Alex Kingston returning to the show. I think River and Twelve's characters could have some awesome enemistry (i.e., a great amount of love/hate banter). Plus, I can always hope that because River will be appearing, Clara won't. (But that's always my hope, to be quite honest.)

The witty line-up of guest cast joining Alex for a magical adventure on the TARDIS will be announced over the coming months.Although it doesn't say "returning" guest cast, I can't help but think about the possibility of Jack Harkness finally making a reappearance, too.
